If the materials do not specifically indicate "brain-based," determine if they are at least brain-friendly. This would mean that you are looking for lots of color, material interesting to the child, many varied activities-especially involving movement, and using several of the senses. I saw one company whose worksheets included the instruction to "say the number out loud as you..." This is very good! Speaking out loud is very important for learning to occur. Ideally, all worksheets should include this instruction. If you can not find any that do, then you need to add that instruction yourself.
If money is tight, many times you can find enough free worksheets to use for your math curriculum and you will not even have to buy a math textbook. By buying or checking out a "scope and sequence" book, you can see what your child should be doing in each grade level. Once you know what your child should be working on in a particular grade, search for worksheets that fill those needs. Look for worksheets that have complete instructions that are easy for you and your child to understand.
Play is how children utilize this particular learning style. Play is one of the most powerful vehicles for facilitating learning. When you play with your child you are demonstrating how much you value them and enjoy their company. This helps build self-esteem and many studies now reveal that children with high emotional intelligence will outperform children with higher IQ but lower self esteem. In the UK questions are being asked regarding whether children are given enough time to simply play. The pattern seems to be that children are given more time to play during their early years in school but towards the middle years a more formal approach dominates their school day. Emeritus Professor Barbara argues that the tendency for state education to focus on a more formal, left-brain orientated approach to learning can have disastrous implications for a significant percentage of children, particularly boys, who tend to be predominantly tactile learners.
